Regardless of which option you choose that you feel will assist you in quitting smoking, the first three days are the hardest. This is when the physical symptoms of nicotine leaving your body is felt the most. Common symptoms such as irritability, feeling sleepy or fatigued, and that slight headache that never seems to go away, are all common symptoms of withdrawal.

Preparation is the key. By knowing what you are in for, you can make plans to deal with the feelings and symptoms and not have to hide away where you won’t bother anyone. However it is also a good idea to inform your family and friends (but only if they are supportive) of your goals. This also gives them the opportunity to stay clear if they think you might be a little bit cranky!

Keep in mind, that by making plans in advance on how you are going to handle these symptoms, it can really help if they present themselves. What are you going to feel? What are the symptoms of withdrawal? You may want to include these things on your list:

Agitated or angry: Find something to do to take your mind off things. In solitude is probably best.

Feeling overly emotional or sensitive: Seek out somewhere you can be alone until the feelings subside.

Feeling tired: I will allow myself to be able to rest and heal from my addiction.

Feeling nauseated: I will go outside and get some fresh air.

After eating, I will: Read to keep my mind occupied so I don’t crave the ‘after-dinner’ smoke.

Drinking lots and lots of fluids, especially water, is a great way to clear the nicotine from your system as the fluids will metabolize your body’s chemical stores. Side effects, at worse, are more frequent bathroom breaks and a water-logged stomach. The upside is that the faster the nicotine leaves your system, the sooner the physical symptoms will subside.

Some theorize that drinking beverages with caffeine in them can cause your withdrawal symptoms to worsen. Others find that it makes absolutely no difference whatsoever. Each individual’s situation is unique. If you find that caffeinated drinks are causing you to crave cigarettes, then it would be best to cut back or stop completely.

Sometimes giving up too many things at once can also open up another can of worms, so maybe just try cutting back on the caffeine. Water, fruit juices, and even ice cream shakes, can help clear out your system and get those withdrawal symptoms done with faster.

A very common side effect during the first few nights is finding it difficult to fall asleep and then to sleep soundly. Even though you might’ve been exhausted throughout the day, when it’s time for bed it seems like everything is racing through your mind and you can’t get comfortable.

Taking a nice hot shower or a soothing bath, just prior to going to bed can be very helpful and can help you become relaxed enough to fall asleep. Normally, this will only last one or two nights at the most, but if it becomes persistent, you may want to consider taking an over-the-counter sleep aid for a night or two. Your sleeplessness won’t last for long.

4. Based on your overall health, be determined to be more physically active. Just walking around the block or taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator can be helpful. Here is an easy suggestion, when you go to the grocery store, leave your car at the other end of the parking lot, instead of near the door. This will both help you get a little bit of exercise and help prevent dings from other cars being parked too close to you.

5. Be proud you have made this decision and begin to think about everything you are going to accomplish in life. There will be times where you have bad withdrawals; you should expect this to happen - it is very normal. Don’t allow these times of irritability, or urges to bump you off the path of success. You have made the wise decision to stop smoking; now follow through with your plan.

6. Change up your routine; do not go to places where you would usually go where there are cigarettes always ready and available. Do something without much thought, something that does not include smoking.

7. Stop putting it off. Don’t find excuses to keep you from improving your health by quitting smoking. Each of us faces problems in our daily lives and we cope in different ways, but these should not be used as an excuse to put off your decision to quit smoking.

8. Be good to yourself and reward your accomplishments. For every pack of cigarettes you do not purchase represents a monetary savings, so use the saved money to treat yourself, a friend, or someone you love to a night on the town. You should pick an activity that will not be worked around smoking.

9. Never rely on any kind of junk foods to relieve your cravings. It is very natural when you stop smoking that we need to find something to do with our mouth and hands; prepare yourself by having fruits or snacks nearby that are also healthy and nutritious snacks.

10. Remember that each day becomes easier than the previous. If you crave a cigarette, consider the disadvantages of smoking, and the advantages you can have when you stop smoking.

A saying that you often hear is, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” I’d like to modify that to say, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life as a non-smoker. Take a deep breath and enjoy the treasure of life.

It is easier said than done. And, this advice can come only from non-smokers or who have never successfully quit themselves.

So here is my advice - from a smoker of twenty years and a non-smoker of ten.

Though for you to come to this point of wanting to quit smoking may be a major breakthrough in your life, you need to know that the desire to quit alone is not strong enough for you because it is not enough for most people - 97% to be precise. So, unless you belong to that minuscule minority, don’t do it, even if you are desperate and want to quit right at this very moment.

The first step you need to take is to try and remove all emotion from the process. You should treat this clinically. Just as a doctor would look at the problem objectively, diagnose it and treat it accordingly without bringing in any emotion, you need to create a distance between your self and your habit. Your anger or desperation will not see you through the quitting process.

It is important that you write down all the emotions and reasons you want to quit while in this heightened state of awareness, but it is equally important that you only use those reasons to help you on your journey to becoming a non-smoker - not to try and keep yourself wound up.

Note your reasons for quitting and then fortify them by searching the internet for as much useful information as you can find. Information is power. The more you know about the task at hand, the less hold the nicotine monster will have over you.

Once you have the desired information, buy a ’stop smoking program’ that addresses your concerns about quitting. Make sure the program is a step-by-step guide that gives you the resolve to beat this nasty habit.

No matter which program you ultimately choose, you must do one all important thing - YOU MUST USE IT!

What would you do when your house is on fire? Would you sit and think, plan and come up with a solution or just jump out of the window? But the truth is that unless you consider your smoking habit as dangerous as a house on fire, you are not going to jump. That is for sure. So, the obvious answer to the question ‘what to do when you are sick of smoking?’ would be - just quit! But this answer you’ve already heard from Many who don’t smoke or those who have never successfully quit themselves.

Before you attempt to quit, you must first remove as much emotion from the process as humanly possible for although you are depressed or emotionally charged at the moment, it is not possible to maintain that level of anger or desperation long enough to see you through the quitting process.

You may want to quit because you have smoker’s cough; a serious health scare; desire a better environment for your children; or just want to quit for yourself because you know it is the right thing to do. Look at your reasons and write down all the emotions and reasons you want to quit. These reasons will help you on your journey to becoming a non-smoker.

Note your reasons for quitting and then fortify them by searching the internet for as much useful information as you can find. Information is power. The more you know about the task at hand, the less hold the nicotine monster will have over you.
